Confirmation that the HSE has offered the vacant geriatrician role at Portiuncula Hospital to a successful candidate has been welcomed by Denis Naughten TD.

The position of consultant geriatrician at Portiuncula Hospital first became vacant at the end of March 2013 and it is now over 12 months since the HSE received approval to appoint a replacement on 17th July 2013.

The HSE confirmed to Denis Naughten this week that interviews for the position took place on 30th May 2014 and that the role has now been offered to a successful candidate who has yet to confirm whether they will be accepting the position.

“I welcome the fact that the important position has now been offered,” stated Denis Naughten. “This post became vacant in spring of last year and it has taken a full 15 months to offer the position to a candidate.

“Not only is this appointment vital for older people who will be able to avail of services locally in Portiuncula but it is also hoped that this appointment will lead to a an improvement in the availability of stroke services at the hospital” concluded Denis Naughten.
