Future Jobs

In Business & Jobs by Denis Naughten

Naughten assists students with career & college choices

Job-Matters-1Recent studies have shown that half of Leaving Certificate students feel unprepared for the CAO form and that half of parents do not believe they know enough to advise their children about what course or area of study to pursue in college. With this in mind, Denis Naughten TD has produced an information leaflet to assist students in making their career choices and filling out their CAO form for college.

“Part of the confusion is that many of the ‘good, secure’ jobs of the last decade are either becoming obsolete or no longer hold the security they once had making it far more difficult to advise students of where the opportunities are to be in future,” explained Denis Naughten.

“Added to this I believe that higher education tends to prepare students for jobs of the past rather than those yet to be created. As a rule of thumb, 60% of the jobs 10 years from now haven’t been invented yet.

“Jobs such as Nano-Medics, 3D Printing Engineers and Book-to-App Converters are possible jobs of this decade, which have yet to be invented. What we need is to give graduates the skills so that they can adapt to a changing jobs market.

“Based on the ‘Expert Group on Future Skill Needs’ I have published an information leaflet which will assist students in making choices as to where the best opportunities will lie in a future jobs market in Ireland.”

He added: “This a difficult time for students and their parents and it is important to provide them with accessible information that can help them make the best decisions for their future.”

The information leaflet can be obtained from Denis Naughten’s constituency offices or on line at PuttingPeopleFirst.ie

Explanation of some jobs that it is expected will be created before 2020

3D Printing Engineers –The trend will be for these worker-less workshops to enter virtually every field of manufacturing, stemming the tide of outsourcing, at the same time, driving the need for competent technicians and engineers to design and maintain the next wave of this technology.

Book-to-App Converters – Over the coming months we will begin to see a form of competition brewing between books and apps. With both being information products that we interface with differently, we will begin to see a large scale effort to convert existing books and literature into an interactive app, similar to the current effort to convert popular literature from print to audiobooks.

Nano-Medics – The medical problems most people have can be traced to a single cell or a small group of them. Health professionals capable of working on the nano-level, both in designing diagnostics systems, remedies, and monitoring solutions will be in high demand.
