Denis Naughten TD has welcomed the allocation of the young farmers top up on the Basic Payment Scheme to thousands of farmers throughout the country but stated that he was disappointed that 1 in 6 farmers, those who established before 2008, have been ignored.
The young farmers top up will be of huge benefit to farmers who are establishing a farm holding in their own right.
The allocation from the National Reserve allocation has also made provision for young farmers who established their holding in 2008 & 2009 and were included in the National Reserve on foot of a mass meeting organised by the Forgotten Farmers group in Athlone earlier this year.
However, it is disappointing that those young farmers who established prior to 2008 and have low or no entitlements have been excluded from any top up. This group makes up 1 in 6 of the farmers under the age of 40 in the country and is serious restriction to the development of the industry.
“I believe that Minister Coveney should establish a stream under force majeure to deal with these young farmers on a case by case basis, which is in the long term interest of Irish agriculture” concluded Denis Naughten
