Naughten urges Roscommon-Galway applicants for New Climate Ambassador programme
“Ideal opportunity to provide leadership in local schools, colleges and communities”
Statement by Minister for Climate Action, Denis Naughten TD
September 18, 2017
“I am very pleased to launch the Climate Ambassador Programme which is funded by my Department. Applications are now open for this brand new Programme being offered to people of all ages across Ireland. The Programme offers the perfect opportunity for people in Roscommon-Galway to become climate leaders in their school, campus or communities and to promote positive actions in a local context,” stated Local Minister for Climate Action Denis Naughten TD.
The Minister is urging local schools and community groups across the region to raise awareness about the Programme which will see 30 Ambassadors appointed nationwide.
“Climate change is the biggest global challenge in a generation. I am inspired by the leadership shown by our young people in raising awareness, promoting recycling and organising local clean ups in our communities. Now, that work is moving up a gear with the first ever Climate Ambassador Programme.”
The search is on for 30 people who can provide leadership. Each person will be provided with valuable support through training on the causes of climate change, how to motivate a community as well as communication skills to engage with media.
“During the 12-month programme Ambassadors will also network to allow the sharing of experiences. This will allow communities in Roscommon-Galway to learn from the experiences in other parts of the country. The new programme is one of four initiatives being funded by my Department in partnership with An Taisce, with climate change teacher training; a Climate Action Week and a schools Climate Expo also taking place this year and next,” added Naughten.
“We have seen the impact of Green-Schools, Blue Flag and National Spring Clean across Roscommon-Galway. Now there is an opportunity to take the next step in this region,” concluded Minister Naughten.
