Local TD Denis Naughten has called for the introduction of a grant to help people who may have faulty septic tanks and which need to be upgraded.

Speaking at a meeting of people residing within the catchment of the Longford Springs in Castlerea last night (Sunday), Denis Naughten said that many families could not afford to upgrade their septic tanks and that some financial assistance should be provided by either the Council or Government

“I have raised the need for such grant assistance in the Dáil on a number of occasions and directly with the new Environment Minister Phil Hogan TD, who has given a commitment to me to look at this issue,” explained Denis Naughten.

“It is important that we have a safe and secure public water supply, the current inspection programme being implemented by the County Council is to try to address the issue of the ongoing boil water notice and potential contamination from cryptosporidium.

“It is also important that those who have to go to significant cost to upgrade their septic tanks are provided with the best advice and support to ensure that all can benefit in the long term,” concluded Denis Naughten.
