Local TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the signing of contracts by Roscommon County Council for the final phase of the Creagh Sewerage Scheme on the outskirts of Ballinasloe.

The announcement was also welcomed by local Councillor Ollie Moore who stated that the contract has been awarded to the company EPS and that Roscommon County Council will be meeting with the contractor to ensure that the completion of the Creagh treatment plant is given the priority it deserves.

Denis Naughten welcomed this final step on a long journey. He pointed out that the people of Creagh in South Roscommon were told in 2004, in advance of the local elections, that the new sewerage scheme had been approved, however it has taken a further seven years for the final part of this process to be completed.

“In the interim, young couples were granted planning permission to build homes and connect into the sewer but while the pipe work was laid the approval for the treatment plant was not forthcoming from the Department of the Environment until recently,” he explained.

Cllr Ollie Moore pointed out that there are 13 sewerage schemes included as part of this capital investment project costing €6.5m by the company EPS Ltd., for the provision of new and upgraded wastewater treatment plants at various locations in the county under the Roscommon Towns and Villages Sewerage Scheme.

“While the overall project on the 13 schemes will take 18/24 months, I’m confident that the Creagh scheme will be a priority in light of the fact that young couples who have already built their homes are waiting for connection to the scheme,” concluded Cllr. Moore.

Editor’s Note: The tender includes capital funding of €6.495 million from EPS Ltd., for the provision of new and upgraded wastewater treatment plants at various locations in the county under the Roscommon Towns and Villages Sewerage Scheme.

The design build operate (DBO) tender submitted by EPS Ltd. Also included an estimated cost of just over €8 million for the operation and maintenance of the ten plants together with a further three plants recently built.

The Towns and Villages Sewerage Scheme is included for funding under the Department of the Environment Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2012Under the contract new wastewater treatment plants will be provided at Arigna, Creagh, Frenchpark, Hodson Bay, Knockcroghery and Loughglynn, while the existing facilities at Ballinlough, Ballyleague, Lanesborough, Elphin and Strokestown will be upgraded.

The successful tenderer EPS Ltd will be required to design and build the ten treatment plants and to operate them for Roscommon County Council for 20 years, together with the operation of three new wastewater treatment plants already in place in Cootehall, Lisacul and Tulsk
