End of era as Elan hands over to Alkermes

Local TD Denis Naughten has the change in ownership of Elan as the “end of an era” and has extended best wishes to Alkermes, the new owners of the site in Monksland.

Speaking following the formal change of ownership Denis Naughten said: “This is the end of an era both for Elan and Athlone. A small, locally based company which went on to become a world player and market leader will no longer be directly involved in manufacturing in Ireland.

“However, the change in ownership also brings about new potential for development of the Monksland site. Not only will this help to secure existing employment but will hopefully see further investment and job creation locally.

“I wish every success on this important day to the management and employees of Alkermes,” concluded Denis Naughten.
