Ericsson job losses blow to Midlands – Naughten

In Business & Jobs, South Roscommon by Denis Naughten

The announcement by Ericsson that it is to lay off 100 staff from its R&D facility in Athlone is not only a deep blow to staff, but also to the economy of the Midlands as a whole, claims Denis Naughten TD.

In response to the announcement Denis Naughten said “This news coming so close to Christmas is a huge blow to both the people who will lose their jobs and to their families –but I do hope that these redundancies can be secured on a voluntary basis.”

“Ericsson is a long-standing blue chip employer in the region and I hope that it can work with the staff and the employment development agencies to minimise the scale of redundancies at the Athlone facility.”

“I also believe that there may be an opportunity for some of these skilled staff to set up their own business and all of the available state supports must be provided to staff that are to be laid off, in order to facilitate new opportunities for them and the communities which will be impacted by these layoffs” concluded Denis Naughten.
