Only one in 6 local college grant applications approved

In Education, Families by Denis Naughten

Local TD Denis Naughten has described as “disgraceful” the situation where only 16% of local college applications made through the new centralised SUSI online processing system for student grants have been approved.

In Roscommon 202 out of 1153 (17.5%) of applications have been approved. In Galway the figure is 685 out of 4334 applications (16%) and in Leitrim 98out of 632 applications (15.5%) have been approved by the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) system.

I have examples of students who applied last June under the new on-line system who are still waiting for a decision from SUSI.

In many more cases, SUSI have mislaid documents which have to be resent, and this is delaying the whole process. “It’s a mess, and action to address it must be taken immediately”.

“To compound the problem, it is nearly impossible to even find out what exactly is going on with an application, never mind have a decision made on it. People contacting the SUSI helpdesk have been provided with inaccurate or vague information and there also seems to be very poor communication between the colleges and SUSI,” said Deputy Naughten.

Student Grant Scheme Application Numbers

266. Deputy Denis Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Skills the number of student grant applications that have been received by Student Universal Support Ireland on a county basis; the number that have been processed, awarded, refused or awaiting decision to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [51574/12]

Minister for Education and Skills (Deputy Ruairí Quinn): The accompanying table provides a breakdown on a county basis of the status of the student grant applications received by Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI), the new centralised grant awarding authority. The data has been supplied to my Department by SUSI.

A number of measures have been put in place to speed up the process of awarding student grants. This includes the provision of additional staffing in both the assessment unit and the outsourced document management unit.
