Alexion, a global leader in the biopharmaceutical sector, is to establish its first company-owned vialling facility on the site of the Alkermes plant in Monksland, Athlone.

“The decision by Alexion, which has been described by Forbes magazine as the second most innovative company in the world, to make its first strategic investment in Monksland is a huge vote of confidence for the area, for Athlone and the wider region,” stated Denis Naughten TD.

Alexion Pharma Ireland intends to initially create 40 new jobs on its Monksland site, with potential for further on-going expansion.

This announcement comes on top on the commencement of construction of a new pharmaceutical plant by Jazz Pharma on a 17 acre site in Monksland, Athlone, Co. Roscommon, which will have 50 long-term jobs and an announcement by Alkermes of a new €20m investment on the Monksland site over three years.

“We now have three key players in the biopharmaceutical sector all based in Monksland and all making long-term strategic investments locally. These developments show that there is now commitment to establish the South Roscommon area as an international hub in this growing sector and I hope that it augers well for sourcing a new tenant for the advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Roscommon Town,” concluded Denis Naughten.
