Local TD Denis Naughten is encouraging all those over the age of 12 diagnosed with diabetes to register for a free retinal eye test which is to take place soon in Castlerea and Roscommon.
The National Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme is inviting anybody with diabetes aged 12 and over to take part in order to identify potential long term sight problems.
People with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. This is a common complication of diabetes which affects the small blood vessels in the lining at the back of the eye and can lead to deterioration in vision.
Diabetic Retinal Screening uses specialised digital photography to look for changes that could affect sight.
While initially the screening will take place in Roscommon and Castlerea, it is intended to roll this out through the country so if you have diabetes you should register by ringing Freephone 1800 45 45 55 and choose option 1.
