Extension of Portiuncula Inquiry welcomed – Naughten

Local TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the extension of the Portiuncula Hospital inquiry to cover concerns raised by parents with regard to births at the hospital prior to 2014.
“I believe it is imperative that all issues of concern raised by parents are enquired into as part of this review by Professor James Walker, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University Of Leeds,” stated Denis Naughten.

“I also believe it is important that the actions by Saolta Hospital Group management are also reviewed in light of the fact that concerns were brought to their attention by the staff in the maternity unit itself.

“The parents at the centre of this inquiry deserve answers, as do the staff at the hospital and the parents who are about to use the service; therefore, this investigation must be solely focused on what happened and what can be done to reduce the possibility of such serious incidents happening again.

“In the interests of all involved I would again reiterate my call for the investigation to be independent, transparent and seen to be independent of other medical agendas,” concluded Denis Naughten.
