ESB to extend peat contract beyond 2019 – Naughten

lanesboro powerLocal TD, Denis Naughten has welcomed the plan by Bord na Mona & the ESB  to continue to burn peat as a fuel at Shannonbridge & Lanesboro power stations, after the current contract ends in 2019.

“While the intention is to increase the amount of biomass & wood chip used in both power stations over time, the fact that West Offaly and Lough Ree power stations will also use a peat blend will be some reassurance to close to 800 direct & indirect local jobs associated with peat milling”.

“I now hope that this agreement will lead to a resolution of ongoing staff concerns on foot of cuts proposed by management at Bord na Mona”.

“Bord na Mona must now engage with its seasonal workers and farmers with a view to developing a sustainable biomass industry which can, over time, reduce peat as the main fuel and provide vital financial support to local families” concluded Denis Naughten.
