The announcement of a Rural Revitalisation Scheme has been welcomed by local Minister Denis Naughten.
The scheme, details of which will be formally announced tomorrow (Tuesday), will see each county allocated €380,000 for the revitalisation of towns and villages with populations of less than 5,000.

The revitalisation of villages and towns in rural Ireland was an issue brought to the fore by Denis Naughten during talks on the programme for government and this announcement is the first step to help deliver upon this objective. The delivery of high speed broadband to every premises in Ireland is another vital element and Minister Naughten is determined to deliver on this within the term of Government

“This scheme will see up to eight separate projects in towns and villages in each county receiving a grant for revitalisation where the project will have a ‘sustainable and visible impact’,” stated Minister Naughten.
The projects will be selected by the Councillors in each county by late September.

“We have all seen the devastating effects the downturn had on rural communities and it is vital that we invest in our small towns and villages and revitalise these areas and to ensure they remain at the heart of social and commercial activity,” added Minister Naughten.
