Naughten calls for Programme for Government review to unlock nursing dispute impasse

I’ve called for a review of the role of nurses work in our hospitals to help unlock nursing dispute impasse

I have been speaking directly to nursing staff outside both Portiuncula & Roscommon Hospitals  and they all want to be caring for patients not picketing.

There is a commitment in the  Programme for Government which I believe can provide the flexibility needed to overcome the current impasse in this dispute without undermining the national pay agreement.

Page 61 of the Programme for Partnership Governments states that  “we will review the roles and responsibilities of various healthcare professionals working in our hospitals”.  It goes on to say”this will include further transfer of tasks between doctors and nurses”.

This review must now be brought forward in order to avert a 3 day strike next week which would have a devastating impact on patients awaiting appointments.
