Funding will save lives on our roads
Local TD, Denis Naughten has welcomed the allocation of €240,270 for 9 school safety and play area projects across County Roscommon under the CLÁR programme 2019.
“This funding, provided by Minister Michael Ring will provide greatly improved playing facilities for children in Castlerea Demesne and Clooneyquinn National School”.
“It will also improve road safety in the vicinity of Carrick, St Ciaran’s, Cloverhill and Mount Talbot National Schools and at Western Gaels GAA pitch in Frenchpark”.
“I have no doubt that this allocation of funding to improve road safety within the vicinity of schools in will reduce speed and save lives, of children, parents and other road users” said Denis Naughten.
“Ireland has one of the highest level of child pedestrian deaths in western Europe, with children killed or injured while walking on our roads, which is part of the reason that parents will not let children walk or cycle to school.
“Research in the UK has shown that for every 1mph increase in the average speed, there is a 5% increase in the number of road accidents. So every measure that slows traffic will save lives.
“Over a long number of years I have pushed various Governments to improve road safety around schools and this investment is a significant step forward in addressing this issue,” concluded Denis Naughten.
