Local TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the allocation of €136,484 to begin the process of redeveloping the Convent grounds in Roscommon Town.

This is an ambitious project spearheaded by Roscommon County Council in cooperation with the trustees of the sports complex and grounds which will see the redevelopment of lands to facilitate many sporting organisations throughout County Roscommon.

“While we are only at design stage, the overall plan will see investment of €6m and involves the refurbishment of the Convent gym as well as an outdoor floodlit 3G all-weather pitch and a grass pitch,” explained Denis Naughten.

Around the perimeter it is planned to put in a walking track as well as improving access and car parking.

Denis Naughten added: “This project, when completed will be a major asset to Roscommon Town and many sporting organisations which currently do not have a base for their activities.”

“Because of its location beside the biggest primary school in County Roscommon and close to the second level schools, this facility will be widely used during the day as well as in the evenings.

“I want to particularly acknowledge the role taken by the current trustees of the property to engage with Roscommon County Council and I want to thank Government for supporting my request for funding for this important community project,” concluded Denis Naughten.
