Local TD Denis Naughten has welcomed the allocation of €350,000 to improve recreational access to Portrun Harbour and Lough Key under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme by Minister Heather Humphreys.
“Funding of €200,000 has been secured for Portrun for water and land outdoor recreation amenity improvements to build on the tremendous work of the local development committee,” said Denis Naughten.
The investment will see the development of a slipway to safely access Lough Ree, development of an accessible walk/cycleway from Portrunny Harbour to Crith Point and the enhancement of harbour side recreation.
An allocation of just under €150,000 has been secured for the Doon Shore Outdoor Amenity area at Lough Key, which will allow for safe access to outdoor water recreation and the various islands on Lough Key and onwards to Lough Key Forest and Activity Park. This will include improvement of access for boating, angling, swimming and walking.
“These investments not only complement the ongoing work of the local committees and Town Teams but also are the first practical step to deliver on the Shannon River Tourism Masterplan launched earlier this week by Failte Ireland and Waterways Ireland,” said Denis Naughten.
“These facilities will enhance the visitor experience to our county and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands as well as improving local facilities that we are relying on over the last 12 months of lockdown.”
