Denis Naughten TD, Cathaoirleach of the Dáil Rural Affairs Committee has welcomed the allocation of €880,000 for three outdoor recreation projects in Ballyleague, Ballintubber/Ballymoe and Arigna.

“The Ballyleague project is to receive €200,000 to help bring together a range of recent investments in the area in order to develop a high-quality visitor destination amenity on the River Shannon. This funding will also complement other investments in Lanesboro and on the adjoining Bord na Mona and Coillte lands, as well as the redevelopment of Strokestown Park House”.

“The Ballymoe/Ballintubber project has secured €179,000 to develop a waterway and looped cycleway between the two villages and the Arigna project has secured €500,000 for a discovery park which will complement the existing facilities at the mining experience”.

“These two projects in Arigna and Ballintubber/Ballymoe are linked together by the Beara-Breifne Way which is Ireland’s longest national marked walking trail and will form part of a broader plan by Fáilte Ireland to promote this walking route internationally”.

“These funds not only complement the ongoing work of the local committees and Town Teams, will enhance the visitor experience to our county and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands as well as improving local facilities that we are relying on throughout the Covid restrictions.”

“Thes projects are all part of a bigger jigsaw of developing a range of tourism activities throughout the Heartlands region of Ireland to encourage tourists to visit and stay in our local towns and villages,” concluded Denis Naughten.
