The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands will meet tomorrow to continue its discussion surrounding Covid-19 Pandemic Supports, with a specific look at supports to the Islands and Rural Ireland.

On Wednesday, at 9am, officials from the Department of Rural and Community Development will return to Committee Room 4 of Leinster House for their second appearance in a week regarding this topic, live on Oireachtas TV.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chairperson, Denis Naughten TD, said: “It is no secret that Covid-19 and its fallout has disproportionately impacted upon our rural communities and our islands, tourism is just one sector decimated, and this weeks meeting and the coming weeks will build upon the body of work which the Special Oireachtas Committee on Covid-19 Response carried out up until their final report was published in early October.

“Water supply is one of the biggest issues affecting islanders. In the context of Covid-19 and the enhanced hygiene requirements and demand for water, this issue needs to be tackled by examining water services on the island.”

The Committee will also examine the impact of Covid-19 on island communities, the progress of islands after lifting of travel restrictions and the services provided to island communities during the pandemic
