Local TD Denis Naughten has complimented Social Welfare staff in Carrick-on-Shannon who have spearheaded savings of close to €50m/month in Welfare fraud and control measures

In the first seven months of the year officials have reviewed 350,000 individual claims for Social Welfare payments resulting in savings of close to €345m for the taxpayer.

“The Central Control Division of the Department of Social Protection, which heads up the fraud and control areas of Welfare payments, is based in Carrick-on-Shannon and plays a key role in protecting against fraud and exploitation of the system,” stated Denis Naughten.

“The control division in Carrick also receives over 1,200 anonymous reports every month regarding suspected fraud from members of the public.

“I also understand that the team in Carrick-on-Shannon will take a lead role in a new comprehensive control plan to be launched next month and ensure that an integrated approach is taken to the prevention, deterrence and detection of Social Welfare fraud across the welfare system.

“This new plan is a welcome development and will, I hope, see a better sharing of information between sections of the Department of Social Protection and other Government agencies.”
